There has been a big uptake in social media in the last few years and much has been written about it. There are different types of networks ranging from social networks like Linkedin and Facebook, knowledge networks like Wikipedia and Yahoo! Answers as well as social streaming networks like Youtube and Vimeo.

How to create a formula using these sites that is useful to your customers is the key to a successful social media strategy. One of the questions you should ask yourself in relation to social media is why rather than what i.e. why should we have a presence on Facebook rather that what should we be doing on Facebook.

Asking why enables you to prioritise your approach and develop the proper content targeted at the social media you are targeting. Although the social media is useful, I always believed that a Blog is the best way of developing social communications.

A lot of people may say that they don't have enough resources or know what to say on a blog. But you don't need too much content to engage your clients. If you have newsletters or press releases, then that is enough content to keep your blog going. Posting on your blog 5 times enough should be more than adequate to engage your clients.

The beauty of blog posting is that this content can be syndicated on your Twitter, Facebook and Linkedin sites automatically so you get all the benefits of social media without having to log into each account and add a link to the post. Just use the RSS widgets in each of the social sites to automatically publish your data. Another way is to use the Twitter client Tweetdeck to syndicate your content automatically.
