Where to find quality backlinks

on Thursday, 03 June 2010. Posted in Search Optimisation

Link building qualityOn-site optimisation of your website does not mean that your site will automatically rise in the search engine rankings. This is something that can disappoint people when they do the on-site optimisation only to see no effect in their search engine ranking.

This is the reason link building is so important when optimisation your site. When looking for quality links to your website you need the following 3 strategies:

  1. Relevant blogs to post genuine comments on
  2. Find relevant forums to participate in
  3. Find Web 2.0 to post comments on

One of the common misconceptions about search engine optimisation is that the number of back links determines your seo rank. This is not true - what counts is the quality of your back links.

How does the search engines determine the quality of a back link? They use a grading system called Page Rank to score the value of web pages. These values range from 0 to 10 with sites such as .. Surprise... Google ranked at 10.

A web page of page rank 4 that links to your website is many times more valuable than a site that is page rank 0.

Where to find quality links?

DMOZ directory - this is the largest human edited directory on the web. The aim of this site is to only display the best quality websites and eliminate the poor quality sites. This is why it is important to have quality content on your site BEFORE submitting to DMOZ.

It can take many weeks before your site is approved by DMOZ, but once it is there is a good chance that your site will rank higher in google. This is because Google sees DMOZ as a high authority website and as it references your website, then this will be seen as a vote of confidence.

Yahoo! Direcory: This is a paid directory costing $299/year but if your site is earning revenue, then purchasing a link from Yahoo directory will definitely help your ranking.

EDU and .gov domains: Domain names with.edu or .gov extensions are seen as authority sites by google because of the strict terms for granting these sites i.e. only government agencies or recognised educational establishments can have these domain name extensions. Target these extensions for the best quality links.
